Prior to joining BioMed Valley Discoveries, Dr. Saha was Director and Head of the Novartis Drug Discovery Incubator, at the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research, where he led a new therapeutic area with a mission to discover novel medicines for diseases with unmet medical needs. Previously, he was a consultant in the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Products Practice at McKinsey & Company in New York City.

Dr. Saha holds an M.D. and Ph.D. in Cancer Genetics from The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, where he was a doctoral student in the laboratory of Drs. Bert Vogelstein and Kenneth W. Kinzler. He received an M.Sc. in Biophysics from Oxford University and a B.S. in Biochemistry from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).

He is a member on the Editorial Boards of numerous journals including the Journal of Translational Medicine, Cancer Biology & Therapy and the American Journal of Clinical Oncology. Dr. Saha serves as a member on the Board of Trustees of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the Johns Hopkins Alliance for Science and Technology. Dr. Saha's work has been featured in The Wall Street Journal and The Economist and his publications in journals such as Science, Nature Biotechnology, Cancer Research and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences have been cited over 2000 times.
 
 
Michelle Zhang, Ph.D.

Prior to joining BioMed Valley Discoveries, Dr. Zhang was a project leader in the New Indications Discovery Unit at the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research, where she championed the drug repositioning efforts in identifying new target disease associations, and led drug discovery and development projects in a variety of disease areas. Previously, she was an Associate Director at Curis, a biotech company whose first-in-class Hedgehog pathway inhibitor program was licensed to Genentech and is currently in Phase II clinical trials for solid tumors.

Dr. Zhang holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Harvard University.
 
 
Gary DeCrescenzo, M.S.
Head of Chemistry

Prior to joining BioMed Valley Discoveries, Mr. DeCrescenzo held the position of Senior Director of World Wide Medicinal Chemistry at Pfizer where he oversaw medicinal chemistry and early chemical development.

Mr. DeCrescenzo's portfolio responsibilities included Site Lead for Inflammation Research where his research team focused on the discovery and development of disease-modifying therapies for rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, and the chronic pain resulting from those conditions. Over his 25 year career at Pfizer and Pharmacia, Gary has held several leadership positions including heading the Medicinal and Structural Chemistry Department, Biomarker and Proteomics Group and Director in Oncology.

Mr. DeCrescenzo is best known for his expertise in medicinal chemistry, more specifically in the discovery and development of clinical candidates in the area of HIV protease inhibitors. Mr. DeCrescenzo holds a B.S. in Chemistry and a M.S. in Industrial Chemistry from the University of Central Florida.
 
 
Linping Zhang, Ph.D., M.B.A.

Prior to joining BioMed Valley Discoveries, Dr. Zhang was an Associate Director at the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research, where she led and managed multiple cross-functional teams for global programs ranging from preclinical research through phase I/II studies in various indications. Previously, she was a founding scientist at Infinity Pharmaceuticals and an NIH Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Prof. Stuart Schreiber’s lab at the Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Zhang holds an M.B.A. as a Sloan Fellow from the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry from the School of Pharmacy at SUNY Buffalo.
 
 
Dean Welsch, Ph.D.
Head of Pharmacology

Immediately prior to joining BioMed Valley Discoveries, Dr. Welsch was a Research Fellow and Project Leader in Pfizer’s Indications Discovery Unit, Pfizer Worldwide Research and Development, where he was responsible for identifying and validating through proof-of-concept new indications for Pfizer development compounds. Previously, he was a Senior Director leading the Joint Biology, Pulmonary Immunology, and Biochemical Pharmacology groups within Pfizer Discovery Biology. His career spans more than 20 years in biotechnology and pharmaceutical research and development, including tenures at Monsanto, Searle, Pharmacia, and Pfizer.

Dr. Welsch completed his post-doctoral training in the laboratory of Dr. Paul Friedman at Merck’s research facility in West Point, PA. He received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Minnesota, where he was a doctoral student in the laboratory of Dr. Gary Nelsestuen. He earned his B.S. in Chemistry from Hope College. He has authored over 30 publications and patents and regularly is invited to present his research at scientific meetings.
 
 
Maria L. Miller, Ph.D., M.B.A., P.M.P.
Head of Portfolio

Prior to joining BioMed Valley Discoveries, Dr. Miller was the Development Director for the Indications Discovery Research Unit at Pfizer. Her responsibilities included management of cross-functional programs and business support in the areas of portfolio reporting, portfolio modeling and resource management.

During her 30 year career at Pfizer and Pharmacia, Dr. Miller held multiple leadership positions including heading the Pfizer St. Louis Discovery Project Management Group and leading a study team for a global biologic clinical program. In addition, Dr. Miller led several Pharmaceutical Science development projects that included the successful approval and launch of a biologic drug for the treatment of acromegaly.

Dr. Miller holds a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and an MBA from the Olin Business School at Washington University in St. Louis.
