Investment Strategy

Investment Strategy, BioMed Valley DiscoveriesBioMed Valley Discoveries stands at the forefront of translational research that has the potential to change the practice of medicine. We can invest both capital and people in projects that are outside the scope of traditional biotech and pharmaceutical companies as well as academia.

Our relationship with the Stowers Institute for Medical Research is what sets us apart. The renowned Kansas City, Missouri based Institute has allocated over $100 million in seed funding to support our operations. The Stowers Institute itself is funded by a $2 billion endowment that resides in substantial ownership of American Century Investments—a privately held mutual fund company with $112 billion in assets. Forbes Magazine named Jim Stowers Jr., who is the founder of American Century Investments and of the Stowers Institute, as one of its “Biggest Givers” for his

Investment Strategy, BioMed Valley Discoveries contributions. He is sixth on their list, joining the ranks of prominent businessmen-philanthropists like Berkshire Hathaway’s Warren Buffet and Microsoft’s Bill Gates. BioMed Valley Discoveries is a for-profit company, but all of the profit accrues to benefit the Stowers Institute.

BioMed Valley Discoveries’ unique funding structure creates an evergreen source of capital for our research and gives us a strong competitive advantage. Because we can afford to take a long-term perspective, we can focus on unmet needs—diagnostics or therapeutics with long development time frames—rather than focusing on short-term commercial returns.

To carry out our goal of developing revolutionary medical technologies and therapeutics, we use an active investment model:
  • We can execute research at our facilities in Kansas City to answer basic science and clinical hypotheses
  • We can work with our network of partners on proof-of-concept studies in the $5 to $15 million range
  • We can take therapeutics to market ourselves or out-license new technologies
Ideas that we execute come from a variety of sources, including from those conceived internally at BioMed Valley Discoveries, from our relationship with the Stowers Institute, from academia, and from biotech and pharmaceutical companies. We base our projects on established research with strong scientific evidence.

BioMed Valley Discoveries’ management team leads our projects, and our talented group of industry professionals performs research from drug discovery to clinical development, including chemistry and pharmacology. Our team also investigates appropriate regulatory and compliance issues in-house to produce a complete understanding as therapies and technologies progress through clinical trials.
